The Essential Scholars website offers a range of materials in English, explaining in simple terms the most important ideas related to individual and economic freedom, and introducing profiles of key liberal philosophers and economists.
The portal compiles biographies and views of Friedrich August von Hayek, Adam Smith, Milton Friedman, Joseph Schumpeter, Robert Nozick, David Hume, John Stuart Mill, James Buchanan and Ronald Coase. A separate section is devoted to women of merit in freedom thought: Elinor Ostrom, Ayn Rand, Deirdre McCloskey, Jane Jacobs, Rose Wilder Lane, Annie Schwartz, Isabel Paterson, Harriet Martineau, Mary Wollestoncraft, Mary Paley Marshall and Rose Friedman.
Short books that deal with each topic presented on the site can be downloaded for free. Also, each book listed includes a synopsis, and several titles are available in an audiobook version. In addition, a host of issues are presented in the form of interesting animations, lasting from just two to five minutes.
Essential Scholars is an excellent source of digestible knowledge for people just getting started with philosophy, economics and liberty topics in the broadest sense – and it’s also a great reminder for people who would like to refresh their knowledge in this area.
